I recently received this Kraftgeek Capsule music stand to review on my channel. The music stand has won prestigious awards including ‘best in show’ at NAMM 2024, so I was looking forward to unboxing and trying out this cool looking stand.

Music stands come in two main forms – the fold up small, but light and bendy type and the solid, but not easy to transport type with a solid area to hold your music. There are pros and cons of both.

This is the music stand I use the most and it is permanently set up in my teaching studio. It is a pain to pack down and use on a gig as the top solid section is so big. It can hold large and heavy books, although keeping the books open is a frustrating problem.

This smaller fold away stand is much easier to transport, although nowhere near as robust. This stand does have foldable arms to hold music, but these are not a great solution.

The KraftGeek Music Stand is cleverly engineered and solves so many problems associated with traditional music stands.

The stand packs away very neatly into the KraftGeek bag, which has sections for the accessories, and room to store extra bits and pieces. I will demonstrate the very handy accessories later in the video.

To set up the stand, simply unfold the top section, turn the knob that locks the legs and open the tripod by pushing down the handle.

There are no locking mechanisms to raise the stand, simply pull it to the desired height. You can even adjust the height with one hand if you place one foot on the tripod.

This rotary knob tightens and loosens the top part of the stand to fix it in position.

The top and bottom sections that hold the music fold out and the centre section twists and locks in two positions. One of the many clever design features is the angled position of the centre arms. If you need to hold a single piece of paper, the clear plastic clips hold the sides of the music high and low. If you accidently cover part of the music, no problem as the transparent clips allow you to still see the score.

When set horizontally, the centre arms can hold wider music. Each side is independently adjustable and opens wider to hold open books and tablets. The clips are easy to open so you can quickly turn pages or swap music.

There is a strip of rubber across to front of the bottom shelf which helps to keep things where they should be.

You might be thinking that the top arms are too high. As they sit much higher than the music. This section is also adjustable and easily moves up and down. You can also adjust the angle of the top arms, so they can either be behind the music, or they can be used to hold the top of the music in place.

The four aluminium alloy sections allow you to raise and lower the music stand from very low to very high.

This is the stand raised to its maximum height. At the minimum height, it is nicely out of the way, but the music is still readable, so when performing on stage, the view of the performer will not be compromised. This low height could also be extremely useful when filming as the music stand is out of the camera’s view.

Although there is no locking mechanism for the music stand’s height, the stand can support up to 4.4 lbs or 2.5kg and it feels extremely solid. I would feel confident using this music stand for both indoor and outdoor gigs.

A big upside to the KraftGeek Music Stand is the available accessories. The stand has threaded holes at the very top, and on the front of the rotary knob section to which you can attach the optional add-ons.

The KraftGeek LumiLight runs on 3 AA batteries or can be powered via a USB type-C cable. The light has two, fold-out arms that provide energy-efficient LED lighting and has 2 brightness settings.

The light packs away very neatly and fits snuggly into one of the compartments of the carry case.

To attach the light to the stand, the large adjustment knob at the top screws it into position.

I have performed sight reading gigs at which the lighting is very low, so to test the brightness of the LumiLight, I will turn off the lights in my studio.

I have no windows, so the room is in complete darkness apart from the LumiLight, which is currently running on batteries. I can read the music clearly, so top marks for this little light.

Another useful accessory is the FlexyMount Phone and Tablet Holder. This device has spring loaded jaws and grips that securely hold a phone. There is a button on either side that when pressed, allows you to extend the gripping area for use with tablets. Even large 13” iPads are catered for with the wide grip.

There is even a cold shoe mount on one end of the holder, so lights, mics or anything that has a cold shoe connection can be attached.

The FlexyMount holder can be attached to the top of the music stand instead of the light, or lower to the rotary knob section. The holder can be connected via the rear or from one end as there are two threaded holes.

The connecting section holds everything in place securely and can be adjusted to suit any angle you would ever need.

When using old-school printed music, having a phone or tablet attached to the stand opens up so many possibilities. Even if only using something simple such as a metronome app, having everything setup in one place makes life that little bit easier.

You could record yourself practising, livestream your performance at a gig, or have the setlist and other information right at your fingertips. I’m sure there are also many other ways to use this holder.

Another use for the FlexyMount is to hold a battery. This could be used to charge an iPad or phone and power the LumiLight to save battery life. There are so many uses for this handy accessory and once again, the FlexyMount has been cleverly thought out to give a musician maximum usability.

Once you are finished with the stand and want to pack it away, the nylon bag feels very durable and offers great protection for your new and futuristic music stand. Having the stand, FlexyMount, LumiLight, portable battery, or whatever else you decide to put in the bag comfortably slung over your shoulder is one of those things that musicians always appreciate.
